I have done extensive inner work and mindfulness practices over the years.
When Maarten told me how he trained professional athletes - e.g. football players and MMA fighters - for high performance, I was hooked.
His tools? Two natural practices used for centuries to improve physical and mental health: breathing and cold exposure.
And while I had explored these areas myself, what he told me was on a different level.
One thing is to sit at home with a YouTube video and try some breathing exercises. The other is to do it with one of the top breathing guides.
That brought to life an idea that has been dormant for some time now.
Let’s bring some of the top experts in their fields together to create an intense day specifically designed for entrepreneurs and leaders.
All designed to balance mind, body and soul. Shaped around conversations, experiences and connection. Combining the focus and intensity required for high performance with the joy and lightness of life and community.

Experience means that this is not something theoretical or something to merely talk about.
This is about doing it. Feeling it. Diving in. Quite literally.
Experience the cold
One of the most immediate experiences is the cold. Once we are exposed to it, we feel it. Most of the time, associated with sensations of discomfort or dislike.
However, the cold holds a tremendous possibility. Short term, it brings heightened mental clarity and a revitalized body. Long term it provides a natural boost to your immune system, increases resilience and promotes overall well-being.
Our guide Stephan Geiger - certified Wim Hof Method Instructor and breathing coach - will help you explore the benefits of the cold and how to make the most of it.
Not that you will necessarily love the cold afterwards - I still have a short moment of discomfort before I jump into a cold shower - but you may learn to appreciate it. Just like I have.
Experience the way you lead
We have all read posts about the difference between management and leadership. But have you ever experienced it? I mean, really felt it? In this Circle, you will.
Martin Spütz - experienced leadership coach and Co-Founder of the MASTERMIND MOVEMENT - will guide you through a set of practices to explore the leader inside of you. A chance to better understand your emotions and connect with your authentic self.
This Circle will guide you towards mastery over your emotions and how to effectively build upon them as a leader. In consequence, you will act and decide more in resonance with yourself and others.
Martin has led similar experiences hundreds of times and guided thousands of leaders.
But don’t worry - this will not be all serious nor esoteric: Martin’s down to earth. He loves the Dalai Lama’s quote: “Let’s do what has to be done with all our heart. But let’s not take ourselves so seriously!”
That’s actually a pretty fitting guideline for the whole PIRATE Circle retreat.
Experience your breath
“Just take a deep breath and relax…” is something we often hear or say when experiencing anger, fear or stress. There is great wisdom and efficacy in this common expression.
Change the way you breathe, and you change the way you feel.
Many ancient traditions incorporate breathing in their practices. That intuitive knowledge is backed by a considerable body of research supporting the effectiveness of deep-breathing techniques.
And the best thing: the “tool” is available to us everywhere we go. We just have to learn to use it more consciously.
Maarten Hemmen will guide you to do just that. His own unique approach builds upon vast experience with various breathing techniques (e.g. Wim Hof and Oxygen Advantage).
He will help you tap into a deeper level of relaxation, sharpened focus, and heightened energy. Just like he has done with high performers in hundreds of sessions before.

As I have written above, PIRATE Circle is about conversations, experiences and connection. This is just the experience part, which makes up roughly one third of the retreat and will happen before lunch.
I am happy and excited!
Happy because this idea is finally becoming a reality. Excited because I can fully participate in the event myself.
After weeks of intense PIRATE Summit “crunch time mode”, this will be a perfect way for me to recalibrate and be “in the moment”.
