It is always one of the most exciting items on the program: startups presenting their business ideas in front of a jury – pitching their ideas to potential investors. As you all know the pitches at Pirate Summit are especially unique. We have our applicants walk a plank – Pirate style! Since our 2014 event is coming closer and closer we have prepared some tips for you. 🙂
What is the problem your idea is solving?
There are many great ideas out there and I bet you know exactly what your startup is able to do. Important, however, is to know what exact problem you are solving. The better you know what deficiency you are targeting at the better your product, app or business model will be. So ask yourself a lot of questions, do your research and narrow it down. Then create a solution to exactly that problem and make sure it is different from what is already available.
Who is it you’re pitching to?
Your audience is always different and so is their taste. Be sure to know your target group, google them, find out what they like and adapt the story you’re telling accordingly. Every and every time again.
Who is behind your idea with you?
Your audience will see you expose yourself on stage. There are many things you can do that may or may not convince them. But have you thought about the impact a (hopefully) great, experienced and skilled team could have? You want investors to trust your idea and the research you did around it. They want to trust your team, too.
So you got it all figured out?
Problem, check. Audience, check. Team, check. Now make sure not to lose it all in a huge chaos. Your presentation (talk and slides) should be brief and simple. Make sure you slept enough, are relaxed and comfortable with yourself – don’t dress up. Show the audience that you know what you are talking about. Let them see a real expert. But don’t rattle it off like a robot: It is all about passion!
Now, now, this isn’t to hard, ey? 🙂 We’d love to see you pitch at this year’s Pirate Summit. Apply for our Walk-the-Plank competition until July 31st. Only TWO DAYS LEFT!
