Over the past five years, Pirate Summit grew to one of the most important startup events both in Germany and Europe. With our Pirates on Shore tour through nearly every capital in Europe and the Middle East, we always tried to get the best upcoming international startups for the Pirate Summit AND also meeting great people plus learning from and about other ecosystems.
The success of the tour was in great parts influenced by the growth of a team – of pirates, startup-enthusiasts and a lot of helpful people – we now call “The Pirate Ambassadors“. Without these people, the startup ecosystems would be a place of TAKE instead of GIVE. Thank you! In the next months we’ll weekly introduce one of them, so stay tuned for some great insights & personalities!
Edmundas Balcikonis (Eddy)
Eddy is part of the Lithuanian StartUp-Scene and since 2013 CEO of TrackDuck! We asked Eddy some questions about the local scene and these were his answers:
What is the local USP of your city/local ecosystem?
Eddy: Lithuania: Europe’s secret tech powerhouse? Lithuania is small. Yet it seems to have one of the most innovative and tech-savvy populations in Europe whose startup ecosystem has been growing constantly with record activity in 2014 and more than $100 million investments over the past few years. For most of us, the only names heralding from the tiny Baltic state are Pixelmator, a powerful image editor, which in 2014 was announced as the best iPad app of the year, and GetJar, the biggest independent cross-platform mobile app store.
However, as Lithuania’s startup ecosystem gained momentum in the past few years, new promising startups started springing up. Some of them have already got huge traction, received record-big investments and got noticed on a world scale. For the others, everything is still ahead.
Where do you see the biggest challenges for your local ecosystem in the upcoming 2-3 years?
Eddy: Small population with growing economy and rising IT sector (ZDNet)
What was your entrance into the start up scene?
Eddy: Local startup events and working for StartupHighway accelerator
