Belgian and Dutch government subsidizes your trip to Pirate Summit!

Ahoy matey,

since the beginning of the Pirate Summit in 2011 it was our vision to facilitate startups their trip to Pirate Summit. This time, we’ve set up an additional benefit for startups from Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands together with our friends from GreenID:

The Belgian and Dutch government subsidizes (part of) your trip to the Pirate Summit. The BITsTour package includes your trip to Pirate Summit, the Pirate Summit ticket itself and two nights of accommodation in Cologne (Sept. 5-7th) for two persons (total cost: 1.767€). There are two requirements if you want to use the package: (1) Being registered in either Belgium, Luxembourg or the Netherlands and (2) No funding more than 200.000€.

Here’s the deal in a nutshell:

Dutch startups:

Your government subsidizes 90% of the total costs of the package. Your contribution: 267€ + 371,10€ (VAT) = 638,10€ for two persons.

Belgian startups:

Your government subsidizes 75% of the total costs of the package. Your contribution: 441,75€ + 371,10€ (VAT) = 812,85€ for two persons.

Luxembourg startups:

The Dutch government subsidizes 50% of the total costs of the package. Your contribution: 883,50€ + 185,55€ (VAT) = 1.069,05€ for two persons.

This is another chance for you to join Pirate Summit. Does it catch your interest? Reach out to Carsten (carsten@piratesummit.com) and he will guide you on board.

Already 65 venture funds from 20 countries confirmed for Pirate Summit

With just a little more than three weeks to go until Pirate Summit, today we want to introduce you to the first 65 attending venture funds. In total 250 active investors will be among the chosen bunch at Pirate Summit. And we’re a little proud that it’s the highest number we’ve ever had since the first event in 2011. They’re hauling in from more than 20 countries, from the US to the UAE – it’s a diverse crew.

Congrats & see you in the semi-finals on Sept 6th! Together with the startups from the first batch, these startups will fight for the pitch prize – the personalized Pirates on a Plane VC-Tour!

Why connections > cash | Pirate Summit Pitch Prize 2016

The typical pitch competitions at startup conferences end with a similar image: Startups receiving an oversized check, shaking hands, taking pictures. While some say “cash is king”, we believe in more sustainable prizes, especially for early stage startups.

PoAP_2

So instead of giving out a cash prize this year to the winning startup of the “Walk the Plank” pitch competition, we figured that the biggest value we can add lies within our existing connections and network. That’s why we decided that we will take the winning team of this year’s “Walk the Plank” pitch competition on a fully-paid 3 day trip to the European startup capitals Berlin and London. And best of all we’ll pre-arrange 1-on-1 meetings with the best investors in town.

So basically, this will be your personalized Pirates on a Plane VC tour. ARRR!

We’ve already confirmed availability with our friends at:

Berlin: Angel.co/500 Startups, BlueYard, Capnamic Ventures, Cavalry Ventures, Earlybird, e.ventures, hub:raum, Lakestar, Paua Ventures, Point Nine Capital, Redstone and Sunstone

London: Accel, Atomico, Balderton, Connect, DN Capital, Hoxton, Index, Mosaic, ProFounders and Spring Partners

Point Nine Capital will even run a dedicated workshop for you (e.g. a pitch deck polishing session or an in-depth SaaS session – depending on the needs of the winning startup).

Travel, Accommodation, pre-arranged meetings – everything will be taken care of and you – the winning startup – just needs to deliver your pitch.

Here are the details of the prize:

Date: October/November 2016, to be discussed with the winning startup & the VCs
Where: Berlin & London
Who: The winning startup of the “Walk the Plank” pitch competition, 2 persons (limited to the founders)

If you think your startup would be a perfect fit for this trip and you dare to Walk The Plank at Pirate Summit 2016, feel free to apply (open until July 31st, 11:59pm CET).

House Rules at Pirate Summit

Our motivation, which is consistent to the vision that shaped the very first Pirate Summit in 2011, was and is to always organize conferences that we as founders would love to attend ourselves. Therefore, we have established some house rules which are indispensable to us for a successful conference.

PS Houserules

The house rules for our events:

First name

Pirate Summit is a first name conference. We want to skip the formalities. Meaningful connections are easier made in a trusted environment. Familiarity and closeness is the breading ground for trust. First names help with that and tear down unnecessary barriers.

VIP  = everyone

The best clubs have the best bouncers. After the door, we treat everyone the same.

We pride ourselves in carefully curating who attends our events. Our goal is to facilitate mutually beneficial connections between people with the same mindset. Also, the people we select have a story to tell. At our events every participant should potentially be a speaker and every speaker is a participant.

For us, what you can contribute is more important than the title on your business card. Therefore, we don’t do VIP areas and there is special treatment for everyone (or no one).

No BS

Everybody hates bullshit. We do too. We value authenticity. Be real.

Give Give Give Ask

The startup ecosystem has a strong pay-it-forward culture. That’s one of the main reasons why we love it. If you participate at any of our conferences we expect you to respect that culture and actively promote it. The first question when meeting someone should always be: “What can I do for you?”

ARRR

For some the infamous Pirate Summit “ARRR” is just a warcry. For others, it is a sign of unity, a well known sound that distinguishes veteran pirates from freshwater sailors. Whether you want to fully dress up like a pirate or just “ARRR” from time to time, we welcome you all. After all, Pirate Summit is what you make it.

Thanks for helping us to keep Pirate Summit a conference everyone enjoys visiting.

See you in September
